OpenAI API pilot · Release 02

HubSpot dominated the CRM shortlist. Buyer priorities still changed the winner.

Across 200 US buyer questions, HubSpot CRM was recommended in 81.5% of answers. But Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, Zoho, and Pipedrive each led a meaningful slice of the market when company scale or purchasing priority changed.

Exploratory pilot · 200 core US questions · 80 matched geography-control observations · GPT-5.6 Luna · web search available · August 2026

Disclosure: the 200 core answers determine the ranking. The 80 control observations are analyzed separately. Ten US answers belong to both cohorts, producing 270 unique primary answers—not 280. This is not consumer ChatGPT, all AI systems, product quality, actual market share, or tracked sales.

One broad leader. Several contextual winners.

Recommendation rate is the share of 200 eligible core answers that affirmatively recommended a product. One answer may recommend several products, so rates do not sum to 100%.

The top three captured 58% of recommendation events.

Event share measures each product's recommendations divided by all 667 core recommendation events. It is a concentration measure, not the recommendation rate used to rank products.

Scale moved Microsoft Dynamics from sixth to first.

Each company-scale segment contains 40 balanced core questions. Cells show segment rank and recommendation rate for the overall top ten products.

HubSpot CRM

Mentioned in 196 answers and shortlisted in 192 before being recommended in 163.

Salesforce Sales Cloud

Mentioned in 165 answers, shortlisted in 134, and recommended in 117—yet nearly tied HubSpot in first-choice credit.

Rare, but usually recommended

Close CRM

08

Country changed less than asking twice.

The small control uses ten matched scenarios, four countries, and two independent repetitions: 20 observations per country. It is descriptive and never enters the core rank.

Methodology, limitations, and release record

The exact prompt universe, scoring rules, review method, public events, and artifact hashes travel with the result. Raw provider answers remain private.

Core study

5 company scales × 5 purchasing priorities × 4 intents × 2 writing styles = 200 US questions.

All core prompts described US B2B companies without naming a CRM vendor. One fresh conversation produced one answer per core question. The 200-answer core alone determines the overall ranking.

Geography control

10 matched scenarios × 4 countries × 2 repetitions = 80 analytical observations; 10 US repetition-one observations are also core questions.

Country was the only substantive scenario change. Ten US first repetitions also belong to the core, so the full evidence file contains 270—not 280—unique answers.

Collection configuration

OpenAI Responses API, gpt-5.6-luna, low reasoning effort, web search available with medium context, automatic tool choice, no domain filters, no user-location metadata, and provider storage disabled. Search was used in all 270 answers.

Classification and review

A structured extractor followed by a separately labeled Codex evidence audit of all 270 answers, 1,121 active product events, and all active citation relationships.

Product editions and vendor shorthand roll up to the primary CRM product. Adjacent software is excluded unless the answer explicitly presents it as the CRM choice. Exact evidence spans support every active event.

Ranking rule

Recommendation rate, then first-choice rate, then top-five rate, then alphabetical product name.

Limitations

  • One OpenAI API configuration, not consumer ChatGPT or the wider AI market.
  • One core response per question; only the matched geography control has two repetitions.
  • Designed prompts are a declared measurement universe, not a random sample of all CRM demand.
  • Observed citations and recommendations do not establish causal influence or product quality.
  • Rates can sum above 100% because one answer may recommend multiple products.
